When it comes to making love songs, Boluwatife Olabode, also known as Fabulous Icekid, unlocks a different experience entirely.

Stretching his discography with his love anthem, “Bad Man Luv“, the young lad sits among the new school acts evolving the Afro-pop scene with catchy romantic records.

Listening to Icekid reminds you of the evergreen catalyst for the growth of Nigerian music, which is the pure yearning for artistic expression. On BadManLuv, Icekid paints an imagery hinged upon the familiar theme of a man professing his affections to his lover. With his soothing vocals and groovy melodies, he unearths the euphoria in his rhythms.

“I go be your Daniel, if you go be my Daniella/ Whine that booty go down, and yeah she looks like Rihanna,” the sensual lyrics stand out in the song, showcasing Icekid’s preference of self-expression over self-censorship. While sensual love narratives are not strange to the Nigerian music audience, the pothole with this is it becomes a tiring narrative over time.

Speaking with the Guardian on his forte as a singer, Icekid explained that, “I have this soft voice, I can actually make you feel the song. I can make music that will make you want to buy. You know, not just to make you listen, but to make you feel my song. I have the ability to drag people into a song. I have a different vocal range and many people have described my voice as hypnotic.”

The artiste also spoke about his musical influences, which are stewed in Afrobeats and American Hip-hop and pop.

“When I was growing up, I used to listen to a lot of Michael Jackson. I listened to Eminem as well. They kind of inspired me. I watched videos of MJ’s performances and how he impacted people’s lives, and it started from there, I mean, I started having passion for music from there,” he said.

On how he entered into the music space, he traced his takeoff to “his secondary school days when he and some friends formed a band called Rock Boys Nations.”

He explained that “whenever we had breaks in school, we would gather together to try and make music. We had this program we used to do back then every Wednesday, and we just did all we could to make people know we could actually do music and people accepted us,” he recalled.

With the current class of vibrant emerging acts in the Naija music industry, Icekid is definitely cut out for success, projected from his sustained dedication to his craft.

He envisioned his race in the industry to transcend into a phase where “people would see him as an artist to be admired.”

Fabulous Icekid currently has two EPs to his credit dubbed, Icekid Vol 1 and ICEY Vol 2, respectively. BadManLuv is currently out on all digital streaming platforms.
