Yusuf to be named Chief Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has secured a $1.5 million bond from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to take care of the salary and other emoluments of Super Eagles’ foreign coach, reports AfricanFootball.com.

The Federal Government has made it clear it will not pay for any foreign coach hired by the NFF for the Super Eagles ahead of the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup, but could approve such appointment if the federation guaranteed the payment of such a coach.

“The NFF now has a bond of $1.5 million from NNPC and so they can employ a foreign coach,” a top official said.

“The era of the federation owing coaches their salaries will now be history.”

Frenchman Paul le Guen, Belgian coach, Tom Saintfiet and the country’s caretaker coach, Salisu Yusuf, have been shortlisted for the Super Eagles top post.

The NFF said the successful coach will now be announced on July 18.

Nigeria is drawn in a tough World Cup qualifying group that has Africa’s number one team Algeria, nine-time World Cup finalists, Cameroun and 2012 African champions, Zambia.

The Eagles begin their qualifying campaign for Russia 2018 on October 3 in Zambia.

Meanwhile, the NFF have expressed confidence they will convince the caretaker coach, Salisu Yusuf, to work with a foreign coach even after he insisted he wishes to head the Super Eagles on a permanent basis.

The 54-year-old Yusuf has been assistant coach to Stephen Keshi, Sunday Oliseh and Samson Siasia, and he has made it very clear he now wishes to lead the Super Eagles beginning with the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

However, the NFF will on today consider either Paul Le Guen or Tom Saintfiet for the top Eagles post, while also getting Yusuf on board but as chief coach with a renegotiated contract and more responsibilities.

And already a number of top personalities have reached out to the former Enyimba and Kano Pillars coach to accept this role.

I wonder what a foreign coach will do differently? Let Yusuf have the job.

Yeah, I use to think in the same direction before but sorry we need a foreign coach. That white skin commands respect and allows the coach to enforce discipline. Sad but true

We are yet to agree that the black race has a problem, how then can you fix it. Worst of all are those that live in the western part of the world. They will never agree. Keep living in fools paradise and wait for GOD to help u.

This is what Pini has always wanted. When will our coaches come of age. Yusuf should head our team. He should not work under any foreign coach. The more we use our people the better it is for us. That 1.5 Million dollar should be paid to Yusuf and it will improve our economy

I agree with the NFF, We need an experience foreign Coach. With indigenous Coach we will have some ethnic preferences and things will never be as it should compare to having foreign coach who do not know which part you are from and will be more focus in using the right professionals and also will bring in discipline in the team.

Ethnicity has never been an issue of Nigerian coach in my opinion. Ethics of the NFF has always been the issue, A well trained Nigerian coach will do equally good as a foreign one. Our problem is that we value foreigners more than we value our own people. By the way, most of these coaches we are importing played alongside our own nationals.

Buhari administration now secures bond from NNPC to fund NFF. Can someone tell me that this story is not real. Of all the story confronting the nation, it is hiring of foreign coach that Buhari administration wants to tackle first.

Provide adequate funding to Nigerian coach and I believe that person will do well.
