Lagos government bans LAGBUS from Ikorodu BRT corridor

Ahead of plans to introduce Intelligent Traffic System along the BRT corridor, Lagos State Government yesterday said that it has concluded plans to relocate all other franchises using the BRT corridor effective from Monday.

The acting Commissioner for Transportation, Prince Anofiu Olanrewaju Elegushi disclosed that all LAGBUS buses would no longer utilize the BRT corridor to load, drop and travel, as they can only provide end-to-end bus services using the Expressway and service lanes along the Ikorodu Road stretch.

According to him, the decision is premised on the determination to enhance and boost commuters experience along the corridor, as the present arrangement has constrained the capacity of the BRT bus services to cater for the people. He also said that onboard ticket selling on LAGBUS buses is prohibited.

He said the exceptions to the new rules listed above include; LAGBUS branded buses on charter must display charter signs and passengers on them can only be dropped on the service lane at designated locations while operators with depots adjoining Ikorodu road are allowed to use the road as a thoroughfare only.

He also said that express service from Ojubode to Obalende using service lane is permitted while returning at designated bus stops just as all routes from the Ikorodu hinterland will henceforth terminate at TOS Benson while loading of passengers from TOS benson outward Ikorodu is prohibited.

“In the aftermath of this, arrangements have been concluded to allocate new routes to the operators of the LAGBUS franchise. Government has also committed to providing appropriate facilities that will provide them the support that will make their operations more efficient and effective, befitting the megacity status of Lagos.”

Elegushi pleaded with the residents to see the new move as an attempt aimed at serving them better and therefore should support the initiative, noting that the better organized the transport system is, the better service that will be rendered to the people.

“Again, efforts are in top gear to revitalize the LAGBUS bus service in such a manner as to allow us undertake a revamping of their services. There are several routes begging for attention. It is high time we did something about them. We intend to provide dedicated lanes along some other routes to accommodate LAGBUS operations. We will in the nearest future provide those route with appropriate road infrastructure and buses to provide our people with first class service.”
