Smartphone to see $1.4b global sales in 2015

According to GfK, the German based research outfit, which made the forecast, at the just concluded IFA global press conference, at St. Juians, Malta, globally, 2015 will be driven by smartphone sales and launch of new technologies.

Global Director, Consumer Electronics, GfK, Jurgen Boyny, said spending on digital devices will ge positive, adding that there will be innovations around consumer electronics, telecommunications, infotech and domestic appliance.

Boyny said emerging Asia will lead regions in the digital world with 27 per cent spending spree, while Middle East and Africa, with emphasis on Nigeria will witness about 8.5 per cent spending on smartphones. GfK projects that major domestic appliances (refrigerators, washing machines and others) will see improved growth from about 0.1 per cent two years ago to three per cent in 2015.

He said that small appliances will develop strong positive outlook all through the year. According to Boyny, while smartphone sales will move from $1.23 billion in 2014 to $1.4 billion in 2015, the technology will bear new markets, which is wearable.

He said smartwatch would see 26 per cent growth, health and fitness tracker 25 per cent; wearable camera 12 per cent; headset 12 per cent and smart glasses seven percent. The GfK Executive noted that there will be activities around the B2B market, as well as the B2C. He noted that there will so much hype around the drone technology in 2015.
