The 2018 edition of the Social Media Week Lagos kicks off on Monday, February 26. Like the five previous editions, this year’s event themed ‘Closer’ will feature a central stage for keynotes and panels, multiple rooms for workshops, masterclasses and presentations, and an area dedicated to co-working, networking and interactive installations.

If you have not registered for the annual week-long event, here six motivations for you to do so:

It will bring us ‘Closer’
The Social Media Week (SMW) Lagos features over 200 sessions and experiences ranging from keynote speeches, masterclasses, workshops, meetups, Panel discussions to talks. The immersive event is a perfectly blended cocktail of sessions aimed at bridging the gap between individualism and community. Closer, the theme of the SMW Lagos 2018 seeks to explore ways to bring people closer and foster community.

The Guardian Sessions
Also in the riveting programming of the SMW Lagos are two panel discussions hosted by The Guardian. The first session titled ‘Staying profitable in the time of aggregators’ beams on how news platforms can stay financially relevant in the days of the platform business model. It will also look into ways to maximize returns on your original content, how to categorize aggregators and most importantly, how to profit despite the aggregators.

Founder and CEO of Kraks Tv, Femi Bakre; Nollywood Actress, Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju, and Marcel Mbamalu, News editor, The Guardian are the panellists in the second session that discusses the power of media and how to effect change with the content we produce.

Novelty of AfricaNXT
Conferences and events always run the risk of becoming stodgy and monotonous after thrilling in its first few instalments but SMW Lagos in its sixth year bucks the trend. Seeking to better its previous edition the organisers are infusing a fresh new concept to showcase and promote creatives and artists doing great work in Nigeria and across Africa. AfricaNXT fits the innovators with the perfect platform to share their products and services. According to the organisers, “AfricaNXT is a fertile ground for NEXT level ideas rooted in collaboration.”

Networking
With two new outdoor spaces optimized for networking, there are increased chances of finding your next investor or partner. It could be as cool as meeting the guy that knows your guy. 400+ speakers and over 15,000 attendees increase the odds of that chance meeting which ends up in an exchange of contact details, the bump into that climaxes with a handshake deal.

Afrobeats N Eats
Great music alongside good food always is a winner; a match made in heaven. It forges the perfect atmosphere. Wizkid playing in the background, finger-licking food, a few good laughs, all while having stirring conversations that breeds innovation. The meet-up and networking certainly aren’t one to miss.

Unbeatable learning experience
Wellness and health, tech, food, culture, sports, film, arts, music, media, photography, literature, politics, fashion, fintech, education, economics, lifestyle, just name it. Social media week covers a wide range of topics with world’s foremost experts and leading thinkers available to share their ideas, insights and experiences in a week of a diversity of perspectives, great learning and fun.
