To advance the functionality of today’s home appliances to a whole new level with unparalleled performance and convenience, LG Electronics (LG) is set to unveil some its newly designed products with deep learning technology that will allow home appliances to better understand their users by gathering and studying customers’ lifestyle patterns over time.

According to the President of LG Electronics and Home Appliance & Air Solutions Company, Song Dae-hyun, the products which include, robot vacuum cleaner with improved performance through memory; refrigerator with smarter convenience; air-conditioner with better energy saving and performance, and washing machine with optimal performance will all be unveil at the CES 2017, which holds in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Centre between January 5 and 8.

He said: “Deep learning technology is the next phase in the evolution of smart appliances, and as an industry leader, we have the responsibility of being an early mover. But even more important than what appliances are capable of will be how companies behave when entrusted with data. At LG, we believe performance and convenience do not mean having to sacrifice security and privacy. They can and should exist simultaneously.”

Dae-hyun explained that the new LG robot vacuum cleaner recognizes objects around the room and reacts accordingly. By capturing surface images of the room, the intelligent cleaner recognizes and remembers obstacles such as electrical wires and slippers, and learn to avoid them over time so they don’t end up jamming the roller brush and requiring human extraction assistance.

He noted that by analyzing usage and eating patterns, the smarter convenience and deep learning LG refrigerator performs a variety of tasks by ‘predicting’ the family’s activities based on their past behaviour, such as automatically filling the ice tray at the time of the day when cold drinks are most in demand.

“Another unique feature of the smart refrigerator is that it can initiate four-stage sterilization system on its own to extend food life when it senses temperature and humidity conditions that may contribute to food spoilage,” he stated.

The smart air conditioner is equipped with deep learning technology that analyses the daily behaviour patterns of its homeowners, including the parts of the home most occupied at certain times throughout the day. With this information, the air conditioner is able to assess how to provide the most comfortable temperatures quickly and efficiently, providing fast cooling to specific areas.

Through the new technology, the new LG washing machine learns about and adapt to the local environment as well as the user’s everyday activities in order to provide the optimal washing performance.

For example, in areas with hard water (excessive calcium carbonate) LG’s smart washing machine adjusts the water temperature and the amount of water used to counter the effects of hard water on clothes. In areas where dust storms are common, the washing machine automatically adds another rinse cycle for even cleaner clothes.
