NITDA, NEPC Partner on Content Export

EXPORT of Nigerian content is one of the ways National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) can partner to further promote and development the nation’s products and services to the world.

Mr. Peter Jack, director general NITDA, stated this when he received Mr. Olusegun Awolowo, executive director of NEPC, and his team at the NITDA headquarters in Abuja.

Jack said, two components of NITDA’s mandate are IT development and standards, guidelines and regulations therefore we are willing to partner with NEPC for the capacity development of its staff and development of a portal for effective management of export procedures.

In adherence to the pursuit of its mandate, NITDA has set up the Office of Nigerian Content Development in ICT to promote local content in the IT sector, he added.
Hadiza Umar, head of Public Affairs at NITDA In a statement made available to Nigeria CommunicationsWeek, quoted the DG stressing that a multi stakeholder partnership should be encourage to drive the sector forward.

He said that the e-commerce platform can be enforced with partnership with the private sectors like Jumia and Konga who are e-commerce based.

He said Nigeria has to learn from India and South Korea to get it right and know how IT developed their country to where it is today.

Awolowo said, collaboration with NITDA to network and make available more goods for export and looking beyond oil which has been the major export the country has depended on for so long. Stating that Information and Communication Technology (ICT), agriculture and entertainment are some of the sectors that Nigeria has so much to export to the world and thereby creating job opportunity for the population.

He added that, the Nigeria Industrial Regulation Plan (NIRP) and the National Enterprise Development Programmes (NEDP) are some of the working plan initiatives they are working with to revamp the export sector of the country.

Nigeria has 17 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) providing over 35 million jobs in the country.

He list rice, cocoa, palm and cashew nuts as some of the products in the agro-industrial sector they are going to concentrate on for exports.

Adding in the mining sector, Nigeria has 44 solid minerals in commercial quantity for export that is untapped. Listing IT, financial services, professional sector and entertainment are the sectors they are focusing on to form partnership for Development and export.

He listed capacity development of his staff on e-commerce, CISCO and development of a portal to serve as an online market place, packaging, labeling and nutritional information are challenges they are facing and urged NITDA to assist in its collaborative effort.
