Not fewer than six buildings and shops were burnt on Wednesday at Upper Iweka, on Onitsha/Awka Road in Onitsha, after a 33,000 litre Diesel tanker fell and caught fire. The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Anambra Command, Mr Andrew Kumapayi, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka.
About 40 passengers yesterday escaped being burnt when a luxurious bus conveying them reportedly went up in flames along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway in Anambra State. The bus belonging to one of the transport companies in the South East was said to be on its way to Lagos from Enugu when the incident occurred.
There are indications from the nation’s insurance industry operators that only about 2.53 million out of the 12 million registered vehicles on Nigerian roads, have genuine motor insurance certificates, leaving about 9.5 million effectively uninsured.
