Residents of Wasimi, in Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, had some of their medical challenges sorted out, while their youths were empowered. Thanks to a free medical and welfare outreach at the behest of the Baale of Wasimi, Andrew Adewale Sobitan, in his bid to give back to the society, as well as encourage healthy living among his subjects.

The free medical screening, which free included eye screening, blood pressure test, blood sugar level test, and medical consultation, was mainly focused on the age, who at the end of the exercise were provided with drugs and eyeglasses, while the youths were empowered.

The Baale, who spoke during the launch of the Civility Day and Youth Empowerment Programme, said the initiative was part of Sobitan’s family Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to the society.

While stressing the need for the aged to know their health status at all times, Sobitan advised: “Going to see a doctor and taking care of yourselves may spare you so many things. But from observation and my experience, I know people are reluctant to go and check their medical status.

“I schooled and lived in the United Kingdom, and over there we are used to going for regular medical checkups. Even when you don’t go to the hospital, the government will be chasing you to come for checkups. As a community leader, I felt it is necessary to provide an avenue, or option for people to go for medical checkups because early diagnosis saves lives and money.”

He further advised Nigerians to live healthy lifestyles, noting that, “a long, successful life requires us to make health a priority. Health is wealth as they rightly say, and it is when you are healthy that you can become wealthy. It makes no sense to be wasting money on ailments at old age. If you already know that you have hypertension, diabetes, or any such ailments, you will be able to manage it and you will live longer and be healthier.”

While urging members of the community to endeavour to make medical checkups a routine in their lives, he stressed: “You should not just wait for opportunities like this, you should make it a routine; always go to the hospital for checkups; carry out blood tests, find out your blood pressure, and blood sugar level.”

A member of the family, Alhaja Sherifat Bola Adeyemi, regretted that “so many of our aged ones cannot read the Qu’ran and the Holy Bible due to eye defects, which they are not aware of, and even when they are aware of the defects, they don’t have money to pay for their treatments, leaving them to live with such predicaments that would end up deteriorating. That is why the head of the community decided to provide this test free of charge.”

Otun Baale Wasinmi, Mustapha Muritala urged corporate organisations to compliment government efforts, by providing quality healthcare to people at the grassroots since the government cannot do it alone.

Osi Baale Wasimi, Mr. Olarewaju Sobitan, on his part, urged other members of the community to join hands with the monarch in ensuring that all and sundry lead a healthy life.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Mosumola Atayero commended the Baale for bringing the initiative to the community saying, “I love the free medical screening, I thank our Baale, Andrew Adewale Sobitan for providing us with free glasses and medical screening. May God continue to strengthen and be with him.”

Another beneficiary, Mrs. Morenike Bajela thanked the community leader for the laudable initiative.

Said she: “Just of recent I started experiencing problems with my vision. So, when I heard about this free medical eye screening I took advantage of it. Now I have had my sight tested, and I’ve been given eyeglasses. I am so grateful.”
