The fear of God

Those who fear God have great wisdom, and understanding of the scriptures. They have so much hatred for evil. Their aims and objectives are to please the Maker of all. Fearing God is wisdom and departing from evil is understanding. According to Psalm 111:10, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endures for ever.”

Without the fear of God, you cannot obtain wisdom. You may be highly learned, intelligent, rich or poor, but without the fear of God, your life will become meaningless. In the quest for acquiring wealth, people forget God, while they gather earthly treasures.

The wealth acquired through the devil or fraudulent means comes with trouble. To fear God, His commandments must be kept. We must serve and cleave to Him alone. His voice must be obeyed at all times. To hear from God and to do His Will, praying for the Holy Spirit is needed. “Then they that feared the LORD spoke often one to another: and the LORD listened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought on his name” (Malachi 3:16). Only those who fear God by keeping His commandments will be remembered for good. Our time is limited on planet earth.

Where do we want to spend eternity? Our deeds must be accounted for. “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8). The wicked does not fear God, but will be afraid and flee, when no man pursues him, but those who fear God are bold as a lion.

The fear of God is a fountain of life that saves and protects from the snares of death. The midwives, who saved the Hebrew babies in Exodus 1:17, feared God instead of the authorities. Pharaoh did not fear God, so he brought disaster to his country and he also died. When Moses needed help, he chose leaders on the basis that these men feared the Lord, and would not take bribes.

Matthew 10:28 says, “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” It should now be very clear that fearing God is necessary, as it prevents us from caving into sin.
