Children of Onward School, Surulere, Lagos, recently had reasons to rejoice and display their skills and talents, when the school celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The memorable and colourful event provided an opportunity for the students to delight parents, friends and well-wishers with various interesting activities including cultural dance, drama presentation, games and choreography, among others.

The programme, which spread over seven days, was specially packaged to show gratitude to the Lord for His mercies and blessings upon the school, celebrate those that contributed and are still contributing to its growth, as well as generally make merry.

Going down memory lane, the school Director, Mr. Adetokunbo Fawi, narrated how the school started on a humble note with nine pupils at a rented two-bedroom flat on Abayomi Street, Lawanson, Lagos and its phenomenal growth through the years leading to its permanent location on Oduduwa Street in Surulere.

He was particularly happy that the school is doing well and has been able to raise generations of responsible, well-groomed students, who are contributing to the development of society, as the future leaders.

He said: “Education is the bedrock of development and a lasting legacy that should be bequeathed to youths. This is unlike money or property, which can be lost. A child that acquires quality education would not fight over the parents’ property or money, having been equipped with necessary skills and knowledge to make a living for himself/herself.

“The skills learned are necessary not only for the child’s survival and prosperity, but also for the development of society. Like the Chinese adage says, give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day, but teach him how to fish, and he feeds himself for life.”

On her part, an elated Mrs. Toyin Fawi Solomon, Proprietress of the school said: “Since inception of the school in 1968, the institution has produced many great and influential people in the society. The school’s vision is to impart knowledge, exploring all methods towards ensuring the child’s successful future. And we are committed to this.”

Highlights of the occasion included a raffle draw, presentation of awards and prizes to deserving pupils and guests.
