OsinbajoTHE Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has called on the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) to expedite action toward improving the quality of teachers and checking the proliferation of illegal colleges of education across the country.

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, said this in Abuja at the opening ceremony of the Silver Jubilee Celebration and National Conference on Teacher Education of NCCE.

The Vice President commended NCCE for its efforts at developing teacher-education at the sub-degree and basic education levels.
He said: “I want to use this opportunity to draw the attention of the NCCE to public outcry on the quality of teachers with the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in our schools. It is my hope that the commission will address this soonest via the ongoing reforms.
“Similarly, NCCE is called upon to rise up to the challenge posed by the spate of illegal colleges of education operating in different parts of the country,’’ he disclosed.

Osinbajo noted that government is committed to improving the fortunes of teachers and the teaching profession.
In his address, Prof. Monday Joshua, the Executive Secretary, NCCE, called on government to collapse the supervision of all teacher-education programmes into one commission for effective coordination.
