Some children and orphans were guests of Hope Rising Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, which recently treated them to lots of excitement and entertainment to mark its one-year anniversary.

For the children, the event, held at Ikola, Ipaja, Lagos, served as an avenue to relax and have a nice time, as they played and danced to good music. There were also poem recitations and singing, among others.

The home was established by America-based philanthropist, Mrs. Titilayo Abaniwonda-Lawal, who has a passion for children and their wellbeing.

The Foundation’s Head Social Worker, Uchenna Obiazor, said the children were celebrated to show them love and give them a sense of belonging.

He said: “Currently, the home has seven children, with an age range of 11 months and seven years. We gave out three for adoption.”

He decried the high rate of abandoned babies in the country, urging Nigerians to cherish their children, as some people are desperately looking for what many fail to appreciate.

“No matter how hard or difficult the circumstances, it should not be a reason to abandon your child,” he said.

As part of the celebration, the Foundation also donated a sewing machine to a young girl, Faith Abass, to enable her fend for herself and her family.

Expressing her appreciation, Abass said she intended using the gift to start her own business.

Also, the Managing Director, Royalsec Services Company Limited, Aare Rotimi Isola condemned the practice of abandoning babies.

To alleviate abandoned children’s suffering, he urged government to encourage establishment of more orphanages, so that abandoned children can be taken care of.

He also encouraged individuals and organisations to give aid to orphanages and adopt abandoned children.

He called on the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to wake up and be visible.

“They need to have programmes on TV, radio, flyers and have offices in local governments, where people can reach them. If they are proactive, incidents of rape and abandoned babies can be reduced,” he said.

Isola urged women to embrace family planning, while girls should use protective measures for sex. He called on men to cooperate with their women to protect young ones’ lives.
