A Deliverer is one who sets free or saves another from a difficult situation. Jesus is the great Deliverer from Sin, the great Deliverer from Bondage and the great Deliverer from Death.

Text: Mark 5:1-20
Key Verse: Mark 5:8, “For He said unto
him, Come out of the man, thou
unclean spirit.” (KJV)

A deliverer is one who sets free or saves another from a difficult situation. Jesus is the great Deliverer from Sin, the great Deliverer from Bondage and the great Deliverer from Death.

Jesus travelled together with His twelve disciples to the city of Gerasenes, a Gentile territory. As they disembarked from their boat, there came a demon-possessed man rushing from the rocky tombs to meet Jesus. The description of this man is one of the most pitiful and wretched in the Scripture. He was naked, filthy and unkempt, a terror to himself and to others. He lived among the dead in the burial tombs. He had often been bound with shackles and chains by those who loved him, but he wrenched the chains apart, and broke the shackles in pieces.

This Gerasene demoniac was cutting himself with stone always night and day and had injuries all over his body. He had no rest, no sleep, no relaxation and climbing the mountains up and down. The evil spirits were in him crying, making him very uncomfortable. He knew nothing about comfort.

You can imagine the pain and sorrow his father, mother and relatives must have been going through, seeing him all the time he came out from his residence in the tombs with blood oozing out of his body.

The Bible said legion of wicked spirit were living inside of him and neither could anyone tame him. A legion was the single largest group of Roman soldiers numbering from 5,000–6,000. No man could bring him under control and no man had the solution to his problem. No man could bring him to soberness and sanity. His case was completely hopeless.

The devil comes to steal away your joy, steal away your peace and steal away everything that should be going good for you (John 10:10a). He comes to kill, snuff out life and he comes to destroy. The devil was killing this demoniac systematically and every day, the man was dying.

I wouldn’t know if you are completely under the control of wicked spirits and they have thrown you into a horrendous lifestyle, which you can’t get out of. Everybody has tried everything for you to be free, but it is not working because the devil has tied you up completely and he doesn’t want to let you go.

God Has sent His Son into this world that you may have life abundantly (John 10:10b). The Bible said this man one day saw Jesus from afar and he ran and worshipped Him. The demons living inside of the man recognised Jesus’ authority, and pleaded with Him to leave them alone. Jesus gave a word of command to the evil spirit, “Come out of him you unclean spirit” and the man was delivered.

The local communities came to see what happened, and they saw sitting at Jesus feet the demoniac, now freshly clothed and in his right mind. Satan had been rebuked and driven out. He had been born again and is a new creature. He no longer faces condemnation, for he is sitting at the feet of Jesus.

Beloved, there is hope for you, there is a way forward and there is a name above all that sickness. There is God before Whom all that bondage, slavery and captivity means nothing, and today, by the power of the Holy Spirit, you will get delivered from this wicked spirit and all the devil’s imprisonment.
