Thought, Word And Action

By S.K Abiara   |   17 January 2015   |   11:00 pm

AS a man thinks in his heart so is he,” not only embrace the whole of a man’s being, but it is so comprehensive as to reach out to every condition and circumstance of his life.  A man is literally what he thinks. His character is the complete sum of all his thoughts (Prov. 23:7).

ONE can rarely separate man’s action and words from his thought.  His words/action is the output of what goes on in his mind.  Though it is generally believe that thought can be kept secret, but it cannot. According to the Bible passage in the first paragraph, thought easily crystallises into words or habit, and these solidifies into action and circumstances in the form of stealing, killing, lying, fornication, violence and selfishness. Such vices mentioned eventually turn man into an enemy of the Lord. Invariably, everything about him will be negative – Mark 7:20-23.

On the other hand, good and pure thoughts would be identified in a man’s behaviour and speech.  Such person would be filled with godly virtues such as love, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, patience, peace, all of which are equal to positive living.

Actually, the keynote of this week’s message is to show you the power or efficacy of spoken words.  I have only taken time to start the message by explaining how closely related thoughts, spoken words and behaviour are because before a man says anything, he must have thought of it in his heart.  He must have conceptualised it within himself.  This is clearly stated by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 12:33-37 when He was scolding the Pharisees.  “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognised by its fruit.  You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good?  For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.  The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that man will have to give account…. for every careless word they have spoken.  For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”  He also stated it in Matthew 15:18-19 thus: “But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man ‘unclean’. For out of the heart come evil thought…”

Going by the word of Jesus Christ which says “… out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks,” means you need a pure heart i.e. Christ like mind to speak positive words.  And words have in them active agent that can create or destroy things.  It all depends on what you say (positive or negative).  Remember, the whole world you see and appreciate today was created by the spoken words from God’s mouth (Gen. 1).  He pronounced some positive words over a negative situation and positive results became visible.  “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” – Gen. 1:31a.

Therefore, as you desire good things this year, let it start from your heart and then find expression in your speech and behaviour.  Even when you are faced with some negative circumstances, the antidote is positive confession.  What you say matters; it has the ability to make or mar your destiny.  Please be very careful of your pronouncement on your children, spouse and other people around you.

Furthermore, the book of Proverbs also warns against the use of your tongue/mouth, while the effect of wrong and right words was stated, accordingly.  “He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin…. He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.”  – Proverb 13:3; 21:23.
