The names of Jesus in the book of revelation – Part – 3

“The firstborn from the dead” contd.

Because Christ is spiritually supreme in the universe, surely we would give him first place in all our thoughts and activities. “Ruler of the kings” (Rev 1:5)

“And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood” (Rev 1:5)

Read Rev 1:5-7. Jesus is portrayed as an all-powerful king, victorious in battle, glorious in peace. He is not just a humble earthly teacher, He is the glorious God. When you read John’s description of the vision, keep in mind that his words are not just good advice; they are truth from the King of kings. Don’t just read his words for their interesting and amazing portrayal of the future. Let the truth about Christ penetrate your life, deepen your faith in Him, and strengthen your commitment to follow Him, no matter the cost. See Dt. 10:17; Ps 136:2-3; Dan 2:47; 1 Tim 6:15. See the discourse later on the name “Kings of kings.”

“Alpha and Omega” (Rev 1:8) “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Rev 1:8)

“Alpha and Omega,” These are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. This is another way of saying that God is the beginning (cf. Gen 1:1) and the ending of all things, including human history. God is from everlasting to everlasting; He is Lord over everything from creation to the consummation of history. To Him belong the final victory over evil and the rulership over all things. This same title or designation for God the Father is used for Jesus as God the Son in 22:13.

Alpha and omega are the first and the last letters of the Greek alphabet. The Lord God is the beginning and the end. God the Father is the eternal Lord and Ruler of the past, present, and future (see also 4:8; Isaiah 44:6; 48:12-15). Without Him you have nothing that is eternal, nothing that can change your life, nothing that can save from sin. Is the Lord your reason for living, “the alpha and omega” of your life? Honour the One Who is the beginning and the end of all existence, wisdom, and power.

Jesus is prophesied as the “First and the Last” (Isaiah 41:4) “Who has performed and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? ‘I, the Lord, am the first, and with the last; I am He.” (Is 41:4)

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Rev 1:8)
“My Lord and my God!” (Jn 20:28)

LORD: An Overview
LORD English rendering of several Hebrews and Greek words. Generally, the term refers to one who has power or authority.

God as Lord Jehovah (or Yahweh; Hebrew YHWM, “self-existent”) is the name of God most frequently used in the Hebrew Scriptures. LORD commonly represents it in the English translations. The Jews meticulously avoided every mentions of it and substituted in its stead another word, Adonai. They substituted the vowels in Adonai for those of Yahweh that produced the term Jehovah.

The importance of the name cannot be overstated. Exodus 3:14 furnishes a clue to the meaning of the word.
