GOD’S chosen people, in separation from the world, are called to an ethical life in conformity to His revealed word. The command to His people is to “be holy; for I am holy” (Lev. 11:44-45; cp. 19:2; 20:26). This demand is not abrogated with the coming of Christ, but is to find its fulfilment in the Christian community (1 Cor. 7:34; Eph. 1:4; Col. 1:22; 1 Pet. 1:16). Christians are to perfect “holiness in the fear of God” (2 Cor. 7: 1). If necessary, God will discipline Christ’s followers for their own good, so they “can share His holiness” (Heb. 12:10).

The Ultimate Fulfilment of God’s Holiness David, fearing that his sin would separate him from God, prays, “Do not … take Your Holy Spirit from me” (Ps. 51:11). John the Baptist, however, predicts that Jesus would inaugurate a new era for God’s people by baptising them with the Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:11). The atoning death of Jesus, by meeting the just demands of God’s righteousness (Rom. 3:21-26), makes possible this intimate relationship of God and His people. Jesus, as the true Holy One, does not see decay in His death as the prophetic Scriptures foretold (Ps. 16: 10; Acts 13:35). Thus, His resurrection signifies accomplishment of salvation and inauguration of the age of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 1:4) in which the followers of Jesus are baptised with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4). This enduring promise for believers in every generation (Acts 2:38-39) is the empowerment to make them holy: the Holy Spirit makes them so (Rom 15:16).

(15) “God” (Rev 4:8)
“Lord God Almighty”
“The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” (Rev 4:8)

Jesus Is God

“My Lord and my God!” (Jn 20:28). “Christ, who is God.” (Rom 9:8). The Scripture declare that Jesus is God. This is the foundation of the Christian faith and is of utmost importance for our salvation. Without Christ being divine, He could not have made atonement for the sins of the world. The deity of Jesus Christ is shown by the following: (1) Divine names are given to Him in Scripture: (a) God (20:28; Is 9:6; Rom 9:5; Tit 2:13; Heb 1:8); (b) the Son of God (5:25; Mat 16:16-17; 8:29; 27:40,43; Mark 14:61-62; Luke 22:70); (c) the first and the last (Rev 1:17; 2:8; 22:13); (d) the Alpha and the Omega (Rev 1:8; 22:13); (e) the beginning and the end (Rev 22:13); (f) the Holy One (Hos 11:9; Acts 3:14); (g) the Lord (Luke 2:11; Acts 4:33; 9:17; 16:31); (h) Lord of all and Lord of glory (Ps 24:8-10; Acts 10:36; 1 Cor 2:8).

(2) Divine worship is given to Christ (John 5:23; 13:13; 20:28; Mat 14:33; Luke 5:8), and prayers are addressed to Him (Acts 7:59; 1 Cor 1:2; 2 Cor 12:8-9). (3) Divine offices are assigned to Christ: (a) creator of the universe (John 1:3; Col 1:16; Heb 1:8,10; Rev 3:14); (b) sustainer of all things (Col 1:17; Heb 1:3); (c) forgiver of sins (Mark 2:5,10; Luke 7:48-50); (d) bestower of resurrection life (John 5:28-29; 6:39-44); (e) judge of all people (5:21-23; Mat 25:31-46; Acts 17:31; 2 Tim 4:1); (f) giver of salvation (John 5:24-26; 6:47; 10:28; 17:2).
