THE Church of Christ, Scientist, founded in 1879 by Rev. Mary Baker Eddy, was designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, Christ Jesus, which should ‘reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing’. Jesus says in the Holy Bible that anyone who continues in His word is His disciple indeed, and He promises that the works He did, His disciples will do also. Members of the Christian Science Church strive to demonstrate how God’s Word of Truth heals the sick, quickly and wholly, because only practical proof substantiates a Christian’s claim to Christianity.

The primary purpose of salvation, for which the Messiah became incarnate, came into the world, was crucified, resurrected and ascended, is to take away the sins of mankind, so that man may have eternal life. This is the emphasis of the Christian Science Church. The Church founder, Eddy says that healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science, or what she terms ‘the bugle-call to thought and action in the higher range of infinite goodness’. She ends by saying that the emphatic purpose of Christian Science is the healing of sin.

The Church, as a whole, is the Body of Christ, and Christians are followers of Jesus. Every Christian should not only strive to be healed of sin and gain the practical understanding of eternal life, but should also learn to heal spiritually as Jesus did, because He enjoins His followers to do this Christian duty. The Church has a significant role to play in reinstating this ‘lost element of healing’.
