William Cowper’s classic song, “God moves in a mysterious way; His wonders to perform,” is a reminder that God is a wonder working God, whose ways are unfathomable. One of the ways He demonstrates His wonders is through His supernatural provision for His children.

We live in a world saturated with human needs, which makes us prone to worry about how our needs would be met. But Jesus cautioned us not to be anxious, rather we should have faith in His ability to provide for our needs, “So why do you worry about clothing?… Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’…For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things” (Mt.6: 28-32).

Manna And Quail
For forty years without fail, God supernaturally provided manna for the children of Israel in the wilderness. One may ask, who prepared the manna and in what kitchen was it prepared? When the children of Israel felt bored with manna they complained that they needed meat, “Who will give us meat to eat?…there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!” (Num.11: 4-6). God then decided to give them the surprise of their lives. He told Moses that He would rain down the abundance of meat for one full month, such that the children of Israel would be so bored with eating meat. Moses doubted God; he reminded Him that there were six hundred men with him, excluding women and children. Then God said to Moses, “Has the Lord’s arm been shortened? Now you shall see whether what I say will happen to you or not.” Soon after, God caused the wind to blow and the whole landscape was filled with quail for the children of Israel to eat. They spent days trying to gather the quail.

Jesus Knows What To Do
Jesus’ feeding of the multitudes was a clear testimony of His ability to supernaturally provide for His flock. To the consternation of His disciples, He multiplied few loaves of bread and few fish to feed the multitude that thronged around Him. As we read in John 6:6, “But this he said to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.” Child of God, this statement also applies to you and me, who look up to the Lord for our daily sustenance. God knows what to do about our needs and situation.

For three years, Jesus taught His disciples to walk by faith. First, He sent them out without any bag, staff, bread or money. On another occasion, He allowed them to carry their bags and provisions (Lk.9: 3; 10: 4-12; 22: 35, 36). In the prayer, which He gave them, He taught them to say, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Thus, God wants us to rely and look up to Him as our source and provider.

The God, Who owns the cattle on a thousand hills, has the ability to provide for His creatures, if only we would trust Him. As the psalmist wrote, “These all wait for you, that you may give them their food in due season. What you give them they gather in; you open your hand, they are filled with good. You hide your face, they are troubled; you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.” Child of God, learn to see Him as your provider!
