Mentorship is a relationship in personal development in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. Mentoring is a process for the informal transmission of knowledge, social capital, and psychosocial support perceived by the recipient as relevant to work, career, or professional development. However, true mentoring is more than just answering occasional questions or providing ad hoc help. It is about a constant on-going relationship in learning, in dialogues, and in responses to challenges.

Mentoring is a process that always involves communication and is relationship based. Mentoring entails informal communication, usually face-to-face and during a sustained period of time, between a people who is perceived to have greater relevant knowledge, wisdom, or experience (the mentor) and a person who is perceived to have less (the protégé).

The emerging leaders must locate a mentor they have to willingly and consciously submit to, and to learn a lot from, in order to avoid future mistakes and unnecessary waste of efforts. You need to locate a mentor to move your life to the next level. You need different mentors for different life endeavours. For instance, you need a financial and investment mentor, career and professional mentor, family life mentor and a spiritual mentor. Your head pastor is a mentor that God has sent to your life, to direct you in your journey of destiny. Like the Lord JESUS said, ‘my sheep hear my voice.’

John 10:27: Be thirsty to hear the mentor’s voice, and always pray for your mentor, listening to him at every opportunity. Sow seeds of all kinds into the life of your mentor and stay close to him. Pay a price in order to follow your mentor, and gain ALL with which God has endowed him with spiritually. I have seen God promote those who took me as their mentor and paid the price of following a mentor. Friends, locate a mentor today and experience the lifting of God in your life as you pay a price and follow, like Elisha did with his master Elijah. 2Kings2: -11, 14. And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, where is the LORD God of Elijah? And when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

That was when the baton of leadership was transferred to him, as they still went on, and TALKED! Talked what at this critical time, one would ask? That was the final briefing from his Commander-in-Chief to make sure Elisha didn’t miss it. The rest of the sons of the prophets were not part of the talking, they were VIEWING from Jericho to tell the story. Equally, I have seen some people who did what Ghazi the servant of Elisha did. Who out of covetousness, pride, disobedience and lack of serious commitment to his mentor, became leprous and could not collect the leadership baton from him. Instead of the transfer of the leadership grace, he was cursed, and the grace went on to manifest in Elisha’s grave instead. What a development!2Kings13: 21: was a serious gap in the leadership development of the mentee.

May God raise you as an Elisha, a committed protégé, who must locate his Elijah and be willing to serve, obey and follow him till the end?
Now, we must quickly realise that there are different presentations in every scenario or case. An Elijah does not need to die before an Elisha can manifest the grace of that Elijah. In other words, your mentor does not need to die before you can do and accomplish the things he is achieving, and even more. It is only that when you are in search of the double portion, then you must ensure you see him lifted up to the next level. This is God’s plan of mentorship for the mentee.
