Jesus heals a lame man by the pool

Do you believe in the miraculous? Do you believe Jesus can bring about the change you so desperately needed no matter how long you have waited for it? Here is a story that will interest and encourage you.

“After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [waiting for the moving of the waters; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.] A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, “Do you wish to get well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk…”-John 5:1-18.

For thirty-eight long years a man laid on his pallet beside the pool of Bethesda and waited. Thirty-eight years, that is a long time in a man’s life to be on a spot in the same situation without any progress.

Thirty-eight years is a long time to wait for anything, it must have seemed like an eternity to this man. How long is 38 years? It is long enough for anybody to stop believing that a change or miracle could take place.

Thirty-eight years is a long time to be in confinement. Every day is the same. Waiting, watching, and hoping, but there was no visible movement, progress or changes. Sitting on his mat has become a way of life for this man. No one had ever helped him. He had no hope of ever being healed and no desire to help himself. His life is stagnant. So, he sits on his mat waiting, watching, and hoping that things will change.

The man’s situation looked hopeless. But no matter how confined you feel in your disabilities or trouble, God can minister to your deepest needs, especially in your state of despondency.
