The second stanza of the hymn, My Hope is Built on Nothing Else’” correctly reminds us that the grace of God is “unchanging.” In the words of the hymn writer:
“When darkness veils His lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil”

Grace is God’s “unmerited favour,” which is unfailing and which He bestowed upon sinners. Here, the hymn writer says that God’s grace is unchanging, that is, it is immutable. When God seems silent or far from us, we can be sure that His grace abides forever. Like Lamentation 3:22 says, “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease.” (NLT).

The grace of God is unchanging because God by nature is immutable. Time and seasons change, but God remains Who He is. Charles Spurgeon wrote: “The fabric of which this world is made is ever passing away; like a stream of water, drops are running away and others are following after, keeping the river still full, but always changing in its elements. But God is perpetually the same…He remains everlastingly the same.” A. W. Tozer contributes his view to the unchanging nature of God and His grace this way, “God has always been the God of all grace, and He does not change. Immutability is an attribute of God; therefore, God at all times and in all of history must act like Himself!”

God is eternal, meaning that He has no end; therefore, His grace which He gives freely is “unchanging.” Grace is “unchanging” because it is like an inexhaustible and ever-flowing river that is ever coming towards us.

God’s grace is unchanging because He is faithful. The faithfulness of God means that God remains Who He is, His character does not change, and He remains true to His word. “Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” (Lamentations 3:23 NLT).‬

God’s grace is unchanging because His word is eternal. As Isaiah says, “The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8 NLT).‬

His grace is unchanging because His promises are yea and Amen

His grace is unchanging because our God can’t lie. “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19 NKJV). God looks upon His word to perform them.‬

His grace is unchanging because His love abides forever. God’s love is more stable and lasting than the mountains and the hills. Nothing can separate us from His love. When God commits Himself to us, that commitment will be final.

The grace of God is ‘unchanging’ because it is secured by the blood of an eternal covenant, which brought our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead (Heb. 13:20-21).

The grace of God is “unchanging” because it is sustained by the power of an endless life (Hebrews 7:16), the power of God by which He created and sustains all things, the power that raised Jesus from the dead, and the power that quickens the dead and gives life to the dead.

The grace of God is “unchanging” because it is blood-bought grace; it is paid for by the precious blood of Jesus shed at the cross of Calvary. It is grace that is born out of love, full of life and power.
