MEMBERS of the House of Bishops of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) have lauded the Diocese of Ijebu South/West for its developmental strides during the past five years of its inauguration.

The Bishops also commended the Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. (Dr.) Babatunde Ogunbanwo, for his visionary leadership, which has facilitated growth and development in the diocese.

They made the commendations, while speaking to newsmen during a special church thanksgiving service in commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the Diocese of Ijebu South/West at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Odogbolu, Ogun State, recently.

Those who praised the leadership and members of the diocese for moving the diocese forward were the Dean Emeritus of the Church of Nigeria and Bishop of Lagos, Most Rev. (Dr.) Ephraim Ademowo; Bishop of Ajayi Crowther Diocese, Rt. Rev. Olugbenga Oduntan; Bishop of the Diocese of Ijebu North, Rt. Rev. Solomon Kuponu; Bishop of the Diocese of Remo, Rt. Rev. Dr. Michael Fape, and Most Rev. Olatunji Akinfenwa of the Diocese of Ibadan, who was the guest preacher at the thanksgiving service.

Dr. Ademowo, who thanked God for the success story of the diocese, said: “The diocese that started unassumingly is now reaching a very high peak. God is in control. He is moving in our midst.”

He described Bishop Ogunbanwo as a goal getter and good example to the clergy and other members of the diocese. He advised them not to relent in the pursuit of Christian love, growth and maturity.

Bishop Oduntan said: “We can see cooperation, unity and willingness; people are willing to spend and to be spent. This is what has been demonstrated today with the people who attended this programme. It shows that people actually love what their bishop is doing in this place.

Commending the leadership for their cooperation and commitment, Bishop Kunponu said: “Cooperation is necessary in achieving results. It is obvious that all the sons and daughters of the diocese have been cooperating, for it to record the progress, which we have all seen with our own eyes. To have clocked five years as a diocese is not a joke. It has been a wonderful experience and we thank God for the calibre of people that He has endowed the bishop with, in this diocese.

The Bishop of Remo Diocese, Dr. Fape, under whose supervision the Ven. B.F.R. Ogunbanwo served for several years, before his election as a bishop, attributed the rapid growth of the diocese to the visionary leadership of its bishop, saying that there is progress whenever a good leader is in charge.

“When we see the landmark achievements of Bishop Ogunbanwo, we can only say that it is the Lord’s doing. His election for this diocese was God-ordained,” Fape said.

In his sermon, Archbishop Akinfenwa urged the congregation to continue as one family, as they grow together in Christ. He noted that the essence of the diocese was for expansion and charged the members to move forward in the work of God.

The colourful event was attended by many distinguished citizens within and outside the diocese, including the wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, who was among those decorated as “special fellows” of the diocese.
