Different Views About Destiny
We can categorise the different characters in the Bible into five in the way they fulfilled their destinies.

There are those who fulfilled their destiny. These lived and operated in the centre of God’s will for their lives. Jesus is one of those who fulfilled the destiny of God for His life. From the onset, Jesus knew that He came to the earth for a purpose (Heb.10:5-7). He ordered His life and remained focused and determined to fulfill His mission. In John 4:34, He declared, “…my food is to do the will of him that sent me and to finish it.” This is one of the most categorical statements concerning the destiny of Jesus. After three years, Jesus then said,” I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work, which You have given Me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was,” (John 17: 4-5).

Paul also fulfilled the destiny of God for his life. At his conversion, God revealed what the mission of Paul was to be in Acts 9:15,16. Paul’s guiding philosophy, as he pursued the call of God for his life, is well stated in Philippians 3:7-14. He relentlessly and sacrificially pursued the call of God for his life. At the end he had this to say, “ For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing” (2 Tim.4: 6-8).

The second group is those who missed the destiny of God for their life. Judas missed the destiny of God for his life. King Saul also missed the destiny of God for his life.

The third group is those whose destiny was manipulated or stolen. Jacob obtained the destiny of his brother by deceit. Some African cultures believe that people’s destiny could be manipulated, even though we cannot defend this view from the scriptures.

Some aborted their destinies in the Bible. Judas aborted the destiny of God for his life. I don’t think God destined him for destruction. He was a victim of his own decision.

Samson battled for the destiny of his life. God can turn failure around. The prodigal son was a near disaster, until he had a turn around. Samson almost ruined the destiny of God for his life. Jabez rejected the evil omen of his background and fought for the destiny of his life (1Chro.4: 9-11). Joseph fought for the destiny of his life. (Gen.49: 22-26).

Seek To Understand What Your Destiny Is
We all have a role to work out our destiny (Phil.2: 12). We have a responsibility to persevere and fulfil our God-given destiny. Despite the prophecies that were given concerning David and the throne, he worked to actualise the prophecies over his life. God sent in volunteers who helped him to actualise the prophecies of God concerning him. Haman and Esther’s effort helped to preserve the destiny of the Jews in Shusan.

The greatest desire of every Christian must be to fulfil the destiny of God for his life. To fulfil our destinies in Christ, we must put our gifts, talents, time and resources to use by serving God. Christian service is the key to fulfilling our destinies in Christ. As we serve God and others, we shall begin to discover the purpose of God for our lives.
