Ereko Methodist Cathedral, Idumota, Lagos founded in 1869 by a woman, Efunyelu, who later became Sister Amelia Bickersteth is 150 years old.

The evangelical spirit of Sister Bickersteth and her desire to reach market women in Lagos Island with the message of Jesus in Yoruba language led to the church’s creation. Before then, the Methodist churches in central Lagos conducted worship services only in English language.

At a press briefing in Lagos last Tuesday to announce activities lined up for the event, Professor of Human Nutrition and Chairman, 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, Prof. Tola Atinmo said the seed planted 150 years ago in a market had today grown across Nigeria and beyond.

He explained that aside planting 18 local churches and contributing to the formation of numerous circuits, including the eight dioceses in the conference area, with the establishment of Methodist Church Baltimore, Maryland, the church became the first and only local one that have expanded Methodist Church’s frontiers beyond the continent.

With the launch of the anniversary logo on June 30, he said the church has positioned itself to win more souls for Christ in future.

Atinmo said activities marking the event include an evangelism outreach from August 7 to 11, 2019 at Lakowe along Lekki Epe Expressway, while on Sunday October 27, 2019, there will be a fund raising gala night at the Eko Hotel, Victoria Island.

Sunday, November 3, 2019 is the All Saints’ Day slated for Ereko Methodist Cathedral, Idumota, Lagos, while Saturday, November 9 is the Reunion Day.

He said there would also be a book launch, games and many other activities. And on Sunday, November 10, there will be a service of Hymn and Praise at the Cathedral and on Sunday, November 17; the church will hold its 90th choir festival.

“From November 21 to 23, the church will hold its second evangelism outreach, while Sunday, November 24 is the Ereko Day and the anniversary thanksgiving.”
