Educationists canvass use of mother tongue in schools

Mrs. Isioma Omoregie, a Warri-based educationist and Dr. Raphael James, a publisher and education advocate, have called on government to make the use of mother tongue a must for teaching in all primary schools across the country.

Speaking on the importance of mother tongue in the teaching-learning process, the educationists said it will make the children to learn better and faster, adding that it will also enable them to relate some of the scientific concepts they will learn in future into their own languages.

According to Dr. James, the use of mother tongue in schools remains one of the best ways to promote and preserve culture from going extinct.

“When primary schools use mother tongue to teach pupils, they would be helping to preserve our history, cultural heritage and values, aside making teaching-learning process enjoyable. It also helps to increase pupils’ self-esteem,” he said.
