Lectures and students of the institution carried placards bearing different messages and barricaded major streets of Owerri, Imo State capital city, protesting the alleged rumour.
 
Speaking to The Guardian Campusnews, chairman of the school’s academic union, Dr. Ukachi Wachuku called on government to continue to accord the school the position of University of Education, as upgraded by President Goodluck Jonathan before he left office. But information from Imo State Government dismissed the rumour, stating that there was no such decision to reverse the status of the school to a Federal Collage of Edu
