Beyond Words: How not to glorify oneself – Part 3

Israel Akinadewo

During Baptism: Even when John the Baptist wanted to avoid performing the baptismal rite on the Messiah, Jesus Christ made it clear to him, that he needed to do the baptism for Him (Matthew 3:15).

This culminated in the Holy Spirit of God, descending in form of a dove on His head, with the voice from heaven, acknowledging that He was the blessed Son of God, in whom His Father was well pleased (Matthew 3:17).

This was to prove that, He did not send Himself, but His Father did and He never for once undermined that fact.

Master-servant relationship: In the homilies of Jesus Christ, He explicitly made it clear that a servant cannot be greater than his master (John 13:16; John 15:20; Matthew 10:24).

This was telling us, that irrespective of where we get to in life and no matter the level of our achievement, a son will not turn to be a father to his own biological father.

The glory of anything that we are today, should never be ascribed to ourselves, but to Jehovah God first, then to our parents, bosses, leaders and superiors at one stage or the other of our developmental growth in life.

During Spiritual Assignments: Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, in His healing of people and the raising up of the dead, would always give thanks to God and asked the healed to go and thank God in His temple.

When He wanted to raise the dead Lazarus He said “…Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me” (John 11:41-42).

He never for once made mention of His power and what He had done, but made God, Who sent Him, the centre of His ministry.

This unparalleled humility and “giving honour to whom honour is due” actions by Jesus Christ, was the standard that He set for us all, to exemplify. Anything contrary to this, is self-glorification, which has no spiritual reward in God’s presence.

Except for those with spiritual blindness, whatsoever that God has used us to do and that He is still using us to do, are not hidden to the world and most especially to those who are endowed with the discernment of the Holy Spirit.

Like they say “a golden fish has no hiding place,” and that “action speaks louder than voice,” God will continue to promote Himself in the life of His obedient children, hence, it is unnecessary and unscriptural to be telling people of all these by our own mouth.

When we do this, it equals to rewarding ourselves before the actual reward from God.

May God’s name forever be praised in our lives, in Jesus name.

Remain permanently under God’s banner!
