You must defend Nigeria’s name, Okon tells Falcons

Former Coach of the Super Falcons, Edwin Okon, has advised the defending champions of the African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON), Nigeria, to remain focused as they meet the Banyana Banyana of South Africa today.

Okon led the Super Falcons to victory in the 2014 edition in Windhoek, Namibia, where the team won her seventh title by defeating Cameroun 2-0 in the final of the competition.

Speaking to The Guardian at the weekend, Okon said if the girls played well they would triumph over the boastful South African girls.
“Our girls should remain focused and take the match seriously. They should know that the name of the country is at stake and their names also are at stake. They should know that they are there in the tournament for serious business,” he said.

The current coach of Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt described the Falcons match against Ghana, as Nigeria’s toughest so far, as they struggled to play 1-1 with their neighbours.

“Mali was no opponent to us because they are not our mates to start with. I only hope they will get their acts together against the South Africans and do the country proud. I pray they put smiles on our faces by beating them in Tuesday’s game. I wish the team the best of luck,” he concluded.
