A weekend sports academy that will give young people opportunities to hone their skills in athletics, table tennis, tennis, swimming, basketball and football will kick off on Saturday at the University of Lagos Sports Complex.

The academy, which will see top coaches tutoring the children on the rudiments of the various events, is the brainchild of one of Nigeria’s renowned school sports promoters, Oluseyi Oyebode, the immediate past Head of Sports, Greensprings School.

The academy, according to Oyebode, is aimed at filling the gap created by the focus on football to the detriment of other sports.

Aside the academy, Oyebode said attention would be given to coaching with the aim of updating the knowledge of those in charge of sports in different parts of the country.

“The need to ensure the growth of genuine grassroots sports development programmes and ensure a solid sports foundation among our students necessitated this idea of the academy.

“I observed that students need to recreate and refresh their brains after studying throughout the week. The academy will cover football, tennis, table tennis, basketball, swimming and athletics and to ensure that the students are well catered for, medical personnel will also be present at every session of the academy,” he said.

He added: “The synergy with some foreign partners to develop and invest in sports in Nigeria at the school sports level is the unique thing about the academy as all our instructors will have the opportunity of regular refresher courses in Nigeria and abroad that will aid the teaching and learning situation in the academy.

“The academy is endorsed by local and foreign partners from Nigeria, Spain, Netherlands, Great Britain, USA and Sweden.
