For years, Nigerian soccer fans have been preaching private sector participation in the running of premier league clubs, a call the Warri-based club is set to heed.

The immediate past chairman of Delta Sports Commission Amaju Pinnick hinted that a proposal to that effect is already receiving the attention of Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, adding, if the plan scales through, Delta State government, which is the sole sponsor of Warri Wolves and Delta Queens FC, will retain 20 percent control over the Seasiders while 80 percent of the club will be sold to private companies and individuals.

Amaju, who is the President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), said the over dependence on state governments for funding has continued to slow down the progress of the country’s clubs because most times, such governments do not respond in time to the needs of the clubs.

“There are some notable individuals in Warri and other parts of Delta State already waiting to take over the club if the proposal scales through,” Pinnick told The Guardian. “I am sure many other clubs in Nigeria will follow suit because it will be a big relief for the state government in the coming season going by the present financial situation facing the clubs.”
