The Higher Institution Football League (HIFL) got underway in Lagos midweek with University of Lagos and University of Benin battling to a 1-1 draw.

UNILAG Marines got the opening goal in the first half but the visiting UNIBEN Royals salvaged a point from the keenly contested encounter.

Elsewhere, University of Calabar kicked off their campaign on a bright note following a 1-0 win over University of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, UNILAG says it is delighted to be the choice of hosting the opening game of the newly established HIFL.

The Vice Chancellor, UNILAG, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe said the HIFL would serve as a test-run for the organization of the 2019 NUGA Games, which the institution will host.

According to Ogundipe, “We are glad to host this as we believe it will bring about sustainable talents for football, which is unarguably the most loved and followed sport in Nigeria.

“When he hoisted the NUGA games 20 years ago, it was acclaimed to be the best NUGA Games, we will do so for this football event. We look forward to a very fruitful and engaging football fiesta.”

UNIBEN captain, Salvation Imonike said the HIFL serves as platform to show the talents of students across the country.

“We are home-grown football talents and we promise to show classical performance.”

His UNILAG counterpart, Oluwatobi John said the Marines were ready for the tournament, pledging to uphold fair play and play by the rules.
