Over 600 players are expected in this year’s Nigeria Cup celebration billed to tee off at the Ikoyi Club, Lagos tomorrow, the organisers have disclosed.

According to the 2019 Nigeria Cup Organising Committee Chairman, Uwem Udoh, this year’s event, which coincides with the nation’s 59th anniversary celebrations, will tee off with a children clinic.

Speaking at the golf section of Ikoyi Club on Tuesday, Udoh said apart from the junior clinic, this year’s event, the 23rd in the series, will feature ladies, professional golfers, veterans and amateur golfers.

He said the high point of this year’s edition is the decision of the committee to fund a special open-heart surgery for a Nigerian, beside the annual donation to charity.

The programme will also celebrate Nigerians that have excelled in business, including Chief Tunde Afolabi and Dr. Layi Fatona among others.

“In our attempt to make this year different, we have decided to recognize and honour some distinguished Nigerians and these are people that have left indelible imprint on the Nigerian sand,” he explained.

The committee will also honour the founding fathers of Nigeria Cup and the late Tony Awa and Tunji Ogunkami, the former Managing Director of Cornerstone Insurance, whose effort helped sustain the Nigeria Cup.

He listed Channels TV, ND Western, AMNI AND FCC Healthcare as some of the event’s major sponsors.
