Imo Udo-Akagha beat Giwa Oladapo 2-0 to signal the beginning of the 11th Cargolux Merchant Express Squash tournament at the Squash Section of the Lagos Country Club.

The closed version of the tournament, which marks the traditional opening day, exclusively for members of the host club, saw some very enterprising play with Cyril Ayamere also in victory mood. He strode past Segun Sunmonu 2 – 0 (11 – 2, 14 – 12) in a very entertaining game.

The Veteran category of the closed tournament was not devoid of excitement as Bayo Shodade gave Mike Adekoya a run for his money but found him in fine form.

Adekoya had to come from behind to win a keenly contested first game. Once he hit his stride though, he proved too much for Bayo Shodade winning 2 – 0 (13 – 11, 11 – 3).

It was, however, a different kettle of fish in the tie between Deji Sule and Akin Aluko, a keenly contested tie which saw Aluko losing steam as Deji went on to win the tie 11 – 5, 11 – 7.

While declaring the tournament open, Chairman of the Lagos Country Club Squash Section, Demola Olusunmade, lamented the neglect squash was subjected to in the country.
