The battle for the four wild cards allocated to Nigeria by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for the Second Tombim Abuja Futures Tennis tournament began yesterday at the Abuja Tennis Club, Package B, and National Stadium, Abuja.

The draws for the wild cards were held yesterday for 16 Nigerian players, including Thomas Otu, Moses Michael, Sylvester Emmanuel, Henry Atseye and 12 others, who yesterday entered the courts to battle for the four wild cards, which will take the winners to the main draws of the competition.

Coach Sunday Samuel, who conducted the draws yesterday, revealed that the victorious four will join the main draw, which has Spaniard, David Perez, ranked 266, as the number one seed.

Interestingly, Egyptians, Mohammed Sagnet (272), Karim Mahmod (429), Isa Tawel (818) and Zimbabwe’s Duncan Mugabe (1033), beaten twice by Nigerian players in Lagos and Abuja last year, are the leading Africans in the main draw of 20 International players.

Nigerians Christian Paul (1267) and Moses Michael (1333) are the closest in ranking but have played only six games since the 2015 Tombim Open.

The fight for the four players will last for three days before the main draws, which starts on April 18 in Abuja.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has also confirmed silver badged umpire, Samuel Kamuhia and Saidu Musa, the bronze badge, for the Tombim and Dayak Open Tournaments. Several Nigerian umpires will assist the duo.
