Ghanaian pugilist slumps as Esepo grabs N1m prize money
It was another great moment for The Guardian newspapers on Sunday night, as Senior Correspondent, Gowon Akpodonor was honoured as one of the best sports journalists during the 19th edition of the GOtv Boxing Night in Lagos.

Akpodonor, who just returned from Egypt, where he covered the 2019 African Cup of Nations, was honoured alongside other sports journalists for excellence in the coverage of boxing in the country.

Akpodonor is the current holder of the Nigeria Sports Award’s Best Reporter (print) gong, having won the 2018 edition of the award at a ceremony held in Eko Hotel in Lagos. He held multiple awards during the days of Eagle Belt Boxing championship in Nigeria.

At the GOtv Boxing Night 19, which took place at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos, fast-rising featherweight boxer, Taiwo ‘Esepo’ Agbaje, emerged best boxer, and was awarded the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy and a cash prize of N1 million.

The award was his second, after clinching the first at GOtv Boxing Night 16 held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium last year. The boxer wowed the crowd with a commanding performance to defeat Waidi ‘Skoro’ Usman, former African Boxing Union (ABU) champion, in their eight-round national challenge bout. He left no one in doubt of his mission from the first bell, as he twice left Skoro sprawling in the first round with vicious punches delivered at a high speed.
