Team Nigeria opens with 21-2 defeat of Ghana
Reigning Women’s League Most valuable player, Chioma Udeaja, kept fans on their feet with a dominant performance as Nigeria’s senior women’s team defeated Ghana 21 to 2 in the first round of the FIBA Africa Zone 3 3×3 Tour at the National Stadium in Lagos at the weekend.
Udeaja amassed seven points and six rebounds, while teammates, Atosu Upe, Nkechi Akashili and Primeiro Agosto guard, Sarah Ogoke, added seven, four and six points respectively, with Ogoke and Akashili grabbing six rebounds as they outclassed Ghana.
Speaking after the game, Ogoke said she was confident that Nigeria would make it to the finals “We played pretty well, Chioma was huge for us in the paint and we have good shooters with myself, Nkechi and Upe, so I am confident it will be difficult for anyone to stop us,” she enthused.
The Nigerian Under 18 Boys also put up a superb performance as they also piped their Ghanaian counterparts 12-11 thanks to Godslove Linus, who hit a late two point shot from outside the arc to finish with seven points, while team mates, Ebuka Kanu and Kenoye John contributed four points respectively.
The Under-18 girls then made it a clean sweep for Nigeria in the first round with a convincing 7-13 win over Benin Republic. Liberia’s U18 Boys beat Ghana 11-8.
The competition ends today with winners going home with cash and other prizes. Meanwhile, former Nigerian basketball stars, Julius Nwosu, Mactabene Amachree and Mfon Udoka have arrived in Lagos to support the FIBA Africa Zone Three 3×3 tour, which began at the weekend. The basketball stars held a clinic and training session for youths at the National Stadium, Lagos, at the weekend.
