Team Braniacs have jumped to the lead with 325 points after 12 round of matches at the maiden Mindgames Premier Scrabble League holding in Lagos. Braniacs have recorded nine wins and three losses, same with second-placed Team Supreme on the first day of hostilities.

On the current table, Team Blazers are third while teams Hurricanes, Gracious Pickers, Olowoyeye Predators and Phoenix are fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Team Airpoppers and Tekena Drones are on the eighth and ninth positions.

In the first day of the league, 2015 World English Scrabble Players Association champion, (WESPA) Wellington Jighere confirmed his prowess as a world champion by topping the individual scores sheet with 10 wins and two defeats, gathering a cumulative of 967 in the process. But it was not enough to put his team FRSC Roadies in the top spot as they finished 10th on the log.

Team Bulldozers and Lekki Bombers are 11th and 12th respectively.

A total prize of N3 million is at stake for any of the 12 teams that wins the league, which next leg holds in Abuja on May 18, 2019.
Speaking at the event, CEO of Mindgames Incorporated, Lukman Owolabi said the Scrabble League was started to create more awareness of the sport in the country.

“We are happy to start a league in scrabble just the way it is done in football. It will go a long way to help more young players play scrabble.

“The league, which is featuring experienced and new players, will go a long way to put scrabble on the right track. Nigeria has won the Scrabble World Championship in the past and it is important to keep growing the sport with the league so that the country will maintain its dominance in scrabble.

“Apart from the cash prizes, the best player in the league will be taken overseas for more exposure. Our dream is to make scrabble as popular as football in Nigeria,” he said.
