In realization of the impact of sports in the life young people, especially school children, members of the swimming section of Ikoyi Club will stage a one-day swimming competition today.

According to the chairman of Swimming Section, Ikoyi Club 1938, Segun Adekoya, the Sports Minister, Solomon Dalong and other top sports personalities are expected to attend the competition, which he said is the first of its kind in Lagos.

He stated that the competition is a way of developing the game of swimming in Lagos and the nation.

“We realized that the swimming sport Calendar in the state is not as robust as it should be,” Adekoya said. “In view of this we (members of the swimming section of Ikoyi Club) decided to organize a swimming competition.”

Speaking further, he said: “It is the first interschool swimming gala fully sponsored by the section for school children in the State and it will enable us achieve gender renewed interest in swimming, catch swimmers at a young age and create a sustainable platform for the development of swimming in Lagos.

“Ikoyi Club has always been in the forefront of these ideals as we have in the past produced swimmers for Lagos State and indeed Nigeria at sporting events such as the National Sports Festival, All African Games and even the Olympic Games. All these swimmers were identified at events like these. The swimming section itself has a standing squad that participates both as team and individual swimmers in local and international competitions, including the annual Swimfest in Gernany. It is the recent decline that the club seeks to address.”

Adekoya called on other stakeholders, especially the state government, to further partner with Ikoyi Club in this initiative.
