Cameroun names 12 home-based stars for training camp

Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr, has compiled names of Europe-based players with Nigerian roots for the forthcoming international friendlies against Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, a source at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has revealed.

According to the source, who pleaded anonymity, most of the players are those who have played for their countries of residence, but have recently agreed to change allegiance to Nigeria.

He said some the players, about 15, recently met with principal officials of the NFF and agreed to play for the Eagles, “but there are some who on their own want to try their luck with Nigeria.

“Victor Anichebe’s case is different because he has been a member of the Super Eagles for more than seven years. He was slowed down by injuries, but now that he is back and doing well for Sunderland, Rohr wants to see him closely during the friendly games.

“The other players, including those who initially refused tom play for Nigeria, are now willing to play for the country of their parents.”

Although he did not reveal the names of the players, The Guardian learnt that former Liverpool star, Jordan Ibe, Germany U-20 Captain, Kelvin Akpoguma, Chuba Akpom and Moses Odubayo, Karim Onisowo, Ola Aina and Dominic Solanke.

Rohr is expected to release the list of the players for the international friendly games in the second week of January.Nigeria will meet Cameroun in their third and fourth games of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying series in August next year.

Meanwhile, Cameroun Manager, Hugo Broos, has invited 12 players from the country’s domestic championship to a training camp ahead of the African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.

The camping will hold in Yaoundé from today to December 21.Two goalkeepers, four defenders, five midfielders and one striker make up the squad, with Union Sportive de Douala contributing four players to the team.Cameroun, who have two points after two rounds, face Nigeria in their next two World Cup qualifiers.
