Four clubs, Rivers Angels, Delta Queens, FC Robo, and Sunshine Queens will today battle to become champions of the Nigerian Women Football Club, which confers on the winner the chance to represent the country in the WAFU Zone B playoff for the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The final matches of the NWFL will hold at the Dipo Dina Stadium Ijedu Ode.

The matches promise a thrilling end to the championship with four of the six teams in contention for the title and continental ticket.

Rivers Angels and Delta Queens have eight points each, while Sunshine Queens and FC Robo with today’s games poised to separate the teams. What this means is that all the four clubs must win their last games at the Dipo Dina International Stadium Ijebu-Ode today.

Speaking on the final day of the championship, NWFL Chairperson, Aisha Falode, said the stage is set for a classic end to the competition, adding that the stadium and logistics have been programmed to make the day memorable for the players and fans.

She added: “Because of the standings on the log, the matches will be played simultaneously by 3.00 p.m. to give all the contenders equal opportunity in the contest.

“Apart from the board members and top management staff of the Nigeria Football Federation, who have been coming to watch the matches, we expect some state governors, led by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to watch the games.

“We have had an atmosphere suitable for good football since the championship started about a week ago and we expect an excellent conclusion to the competition.”

In the last matches played on Thursday, Rivers Angels pummelled Edo Queens of Benin 4-0 in the first game of the day, to take their points to eight, while Delta Queens played a goalless draw with Bayelsa Queens.

The revelation of the championship, FC Robo, lost the opportunity to climb to 10 points when they were held by Sunshine Stars. They are now condemned to beat Delta Queens to realise their ambition of being Nigeria’s first women club to play in the continent.

To win the title, Rivers Angels with eight points and plus eight goals difference must beat Sunshine Queens to end with a total 11 points. A draw will give them nine points and might not suffice if either FC Robo or Delta Queens triumph in their match.

Bottom teams, Bayelsa Queens and Edo Queens are just playing for pride as none of them have any chance of finishing tops of the championship.
