‘Revenge Cup is to sustain bond between Igbobi, Gregory Old Boys’

Team Manager of St. Gregory Old Boys School Club, Mr. Afolabi Omoni, has said the recently organised cricket contest between the Igbobi College Old Boys and St. Gregory Old Boys School was to sustain the bond between the old students of the schools.

In a chat with The Guardian, Omoni said the challenge between the two schools goes way back into the 50s and 60s, which was why the Revenge Cup was introduced.

“We have a healthy history playing against each other. The rivalry goes on into partnership and we want to ensure that it remains even after us. We are also trying to develop cricket at the youth level with our experience,” he said.

Captain of the Igbobi College Cricket Club, Onabanjo Adesola, who reechoed Omoni’s view, said the challenge is usually a friendly game between the two rivals schools and friends in many regards coming together to play a game that has bound the schools together for more than 40 years. It is simply to bring back good old times for both schools,” he stated.

At the end of the contest held at the Igbobi College Cricket Oval, St. Gregory’s College Old Boys won the match, which is a repeat of the loss earlier suffered by school in the year.

The win was Gregg’s’ second over their archrivals in successive games, they won the toss and elected to bat first.

Led by their captain, Dele Oshodi, Gregg’s came all out with some fine batting that dictated the tone of the game in the first innings.

Igbobi Boys set a score of 80 runs in the first innings but Gregg’s bowled them out in the second to win the game in 21 overs with eight wickets to spare.
