Retired General promises to promote canoeing in Nigeria, Africa
Retired Admiral Festus Porbeni, the newly elected Vice-President (V-P) of the Confederation of Africa Canoeing (CAC), on Friday promised to use his good offices to advance the sport in Nigeria and Africa.
NAN reports that Porbeni, who is the current President of Nigeria Rowing, Sailing Canoeing Federation, was elected as CAC V-P on April 4 in Durban, South Africa.
Porbeni spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on the sidelines of a three-day seminar organised by the Nigeria Rowing, Sailing and Canoe Federation (NRSCF).
It was in conjunction with the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC).
He said that his position would not only be of benefit to the development of canoeing in the country but also to the continent at large.
“It is a great privilege for me to be part of the continental body of canoeing as a sport, I will take advantage of this opportunity to impact on the sport locally and in Africa.
“We all know there is politics in every aspect of human life and sport is not excluded from it.
“Nigeria now has a voice in every decision-making at the continental level and it is a great advantage for the country.
“At the world level, we want African athletes to win medals and compete favourably with athletes from other continents at major world competitions,” he said.
He said that Africa was blessed with favourable weather compared to other continents, noting that it was an added advantage to the continent to excel in the sport globally. l
