Porbeni discovers another ‘antelope’ in Nigerian athletics
Former Nigerian jumper, hurdler and sprinter, Seigha Porbeni, has predicted that young sprinter, Raymond Okhevo, would turn out to be another Divine Oduduru in the nation’s athletics.
Okhevo was the cynosure of all eyes during the Pastor D.K Olukoya’s U-20 Athletics Championship in Lagos, where he posted a spectacular time of 10.37 seconds in the 100m final at the Yaba College of Technology. It was the third fastest time by any Nigerian athlete this year.
For Porbeni, who was once the ‘commander-in-chief’ of Delta State Sports Council, the time recorded by Okhevo was encouraging, considering his youthful age in athletics.
The young athlete, who led Team Delta to win the championship, is a product of the High Performance Center located at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to Porbeni, the High Performance Center in Port Harcourt is capable of turning the nation’s athletics around for good if government and right-thinking Nigerians gave it the needed support.
With the likes of Divine Oduduru and Ese Brume now competing at senior level, Porbeni says the discovery of Raymond Okhevo would help Nigerian athletics stabilize at the youth and junior level.
