Plateau’s golf development programme will boost tourism, says Lalong

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has expressed his determination to develop sports in the state to boost tourism. With the peace being currently enjoyed in the state, he said his administration would focus on sports activities to drive commerce in the state through golf tourism.

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has expressed his determination to develop sports in the state to boost tourism. With the peace being currently enjoyed in the state, he said his administration would focus on sports activities to drive commerce in the state through golf tourism.

Speaking at the end of the Golf Icons Tournament organised by the Daily Trust newspapers in conjunction with the Plateau State Government at the Lamingo Golf Club, Lalong disclosed that he has put the machinery in place to revolutionise sports in the state.

According to the governor, on assumption of office, he discovered that Plateau United FC was about going on relegation, adding, however, that with determination and enthusiasm by the government and people of the state, he has reengineered the team into becoming a force in the Nigerian football.
He expressed delight that Plateau United FC is currently on top of the league table and promised that he would continue to support the team.

Lalong also pointed out that efforts were being intensified towards ensuring that major tournaments were accorded a new lease of life in the state.
He promised to consolidate on the progress of peace not only for the unity of the state but the entire country so as to woo investors to the state.

Also speaking on the occasion, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who was represented by Major General IBM Haruna, applauded the organisers and the sponsors for recognizing him as a life golf icon.

General Haruna, in his speech referred to General Gowon as a man who stood for the unity of the country, using golf as an instrument of advancing tourism in the country.

While thanking Lalong for creating an enabling environment for the tournament, he encouraged reputable people to be involved in the game of golf towards keeping one Nigeria.

Explaining the choice of Jos for the competition, Daily Trust Newspapers said it was as a result of the peace being enjoyed in the state, adding that the tournament was organised to recognize those that promote golf across the society.

In his speech, the Captain of Lamingo Golf Club, Mr. Tangame Dapoet, said that hosting of the tournament was a total confirmation that peace had returned to the state.

He disclosed that the Governor’s Golf Cup tournament would commence in December, adding that it is expected to witness a large turnout of golfers from across the country.
