According to a representative of the organisers, Concierge Sports, Mr. Ibukun Obatoyinbo, the primary aim of the event is to raise awareness and funds for the DofE International Award, Nigeria, which is the world’s leading achievement award for young people. It is available to anyone 14-24 years old.
“As you can see, the reasons for establishing this event is well pronounced in Nigeria, where our youths, especially those from North-East and South-South regions, have had to live with scourge of violence and upheaval for many years now.
“The DofE International Award is therefore aiming to reset the paths of children and young people in the society through achievement awards, non-competitive programme of activities that equips them for life and develops them into responsible, committed and dedicated global citizens,” Obatoyinbo said.
First played in Portugal in 2001, the Duke of Edinburgh Cup has now spread globally to several regions of the world. Nigeria is now joining the global fraternity.
Obatoyinbo revealed that the project was being supported by NNPC/Eroton E&P JV, Rite Foods (Bigi brands), Stanbic IBTC, Niger Delta E&P, Megamound Properties Group, Mercure Moorehouse Hotel, Ikoyi, and Lufthansa City Centre/Tifa Travels, among others.
He added that the winner and runner up of the event would enjoy an all expense paid trip to the world finals in Windsor, United Kingdom in October.
