Organizers of the ninth Ships and Ports Maritime Championship, which kicked off at the National Stadium Lagos last week, have praised the participating teams for their good sportsmanship at the competition. They are thrilled that all the teams competing in the tourney enjoyed free and fair officiating.

The championship, which is aimed at building friendship and cooperation among the government and private sector operatives in the maritime industry, ends tomorrow.

In some of the matches, defending champions, Nigeria Customs came from a two-goal deficit against Nigeria Navy to tie the game 2-2 at the weekend.

Speaking at the event, Assistant Director of Sports, Nigerian Navy, Friday Ture said the Navy focus was to win the tourney and also help in inculcating the virtues of discipline to the maritime sector.

Chairperson of Nigeria Ship Owners Forum, Margaret Orakwusi, who commended the organisers for staging the tourney, said the aim of the competition was to create quality networking among its members and also have fun.

“The championship is not a do or die affair. We are participating at the event to improve the quality of our service in the maritime sector. Coming together to play football is another way to create friendliness among the workers,” she said.

In other concluded matches, TICT fell 4-0 to NPA, while Josephdam beat Africa Circle 3-0. Ports Authority beat African Circle 3-0, just as Josephdam Terminal was beaten 4-2 by Nigeria Customs Service.

Coordinator of the programme, Eucharia Okoli said the competition was designed by Ships And Ports Communications to help maritime operators network and be acquainted through football tournament.

“I have been coordinating this event for nine years and bringing the maritime sector together through football has been exciting over the years. We have had challenges of mercenaries participating in the event and also poor officiating, but all these have been put in order based on the committee that was set up to tackle the problems.
