The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) has commended the Sports Ministry for upgrading Scrabble to a medal winning sport ahead of the 2020 National Sports Festival taking place in Edo State next year. The competition will hold from from March 22 March to April 1.

The NSF Technical Director, Umar Faruq Baba-Inna told The Guardian that upgrading Scrabble to a medal winning event of the National Sports Festival would help in its grassroots development.

He said Nigeria would continue to dominate in scrabble championships if more young players were given the opportunity to hone their talents in a big platform like the sports festival.

Baba-Inna, who praised the stakeholders that have lifted Nigerian scrabble, declared that the federation would not relent in efforts to keep Nigeria in the world map in the game.

“The NSF is delighted that scrabble has been upgraded to a medal winning event in next year’s sports festival. The growing awareness of the sport in Nigeria and other countries in the world will spur more talented players to take part in the event.”

Four other sports, including Kickboxing, Kung Fu, Squash and Karate were also upgraded to medal winning events in next year’s sports festival at the extraordinary National Council on Sports meeting in Benin.
