The Petitions and Appeals Committee for the June 13 National Sports Federations Elections has so far received 20 petitions from 11 federations, an official of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Toke Makinde revealed yesterday in Abuja.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) six of the petitions are from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), while the rest are from 10 other federations, including table tennis, kick boxing, gymnastics, cricket, weightlifting, volleyball, handball, judo, traditional sports and taekwondo.

“All petitions have been submitted in accordance with the electoral guidelines.“Also, all petitioners have paid the money set aside for them to pay. What is left now is for the committee to deliberate and take decisions on the matters, depending on the documents made available to the members,’’ he said.

The electoral guidelines stipulate that “all appeals shall be submitted with a non-refundable fee of N50, 000 at the zonal level and N100,000 at the national level.”
While some of the aggrieved candidates have appealed the conduct and results of the elections, the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) is still divided with two separate parties laying claim to being the authentic NBBF.

One of the groups led by immediate past president of the federation, Tijjani Umar, held its elections in Kano on June 12 claiming to be guided by the federation’s constitution. The other, led by Musa Kida, like the other sports federations, conducted its polls on June 13 at the National Stadium, Abuja with officials of the Ministry of Sports and other stakeholders as supervisors and observers.

Although the Sports Ministry has recognised officials of the NBBF elected at the Abuja polls, observers believe events leading to resolution of the impasse will start unraveling after the inauguration of the boards on July 13.
