THE 2015 edition of the Mieza Football Tournament will get underway today at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.

The tournament, which is for U-20 players, is organised by Mieza Sports Management Limited, and is expected to serve as a platform for academies and clubs to showcase their players to international teams.

Six teams will take part in the two-day tournament. They include 36 Lions, COD United and Cowbell Academy, who will compete out of Group A, and Spartan FC, Regal Academy and Eko U-17’s, who will compete out of Group B.

All the games, except for the final, will consist of two halves of 30 minutes each.

The final will however not be a straight off affair between the tournament’s top-two sides as only the top 22 players selected by the tournament’s organisers will take to the pitch.

In a statement made available to The Guardian, the organisers said, “Academies in the country don’t have an organised competition like European countries to participate in, which hinders development at the youth level.
